What specialists publications tell about DT 880...
“With a price label of € 269, the DT 880 is certainly an expensive pleasure. Having said that, I do emphasise the word “pleasure” because the sound is immaculate and the standard of finish is fantastic. Although it weighs 290 grams, it is so comfortable to wear that, combined with its half-open earpiece, you hardly notice the fact, even after extended listening periods. (...) A top-flight headset for sound gourmets who may intermingle audio books with Beethoven’s fourth symphony to give their ears a real treat.”
“a score of 6 out of 6”
(Hörbücher [audio books], 02/2007)
“A top-flight headset for sound gourmets” (Hörbücher [audio books], 02/2007)
“Truly excellent” , “The headsets sound gentle, peaceful and perfectly balanced”, “94 out of 100 points” (DIGITAL TESTED, 03/2007)
“The headset from beyerdynamic is ideally suited to act as a linear mastering headset.” (Videoaktiv Digital, 04/2007)
• Very linear sound
• Excellent sound location
• Ambient sound is attenuated, but can be still perceived (semi-open design)

“Voluminous and spatial sound and really comfortable to wear” (APAots, 27.8.2007)
• Analytical and high-resolution audio reproduction
• Strong bass and treble
• Lightest headphone of its class
With the introduction of the A1, beyerdynamic enters a new area of audio reproduction. After intense fundamental research, beyerdynamic have succeeded in developing a brand new audiophile-quality headphone amplifier, providing precise audio performance even when used with our demanding 600 ohm premium line headphones. With its unique intelligent-circuit concept, the A1 is capable of reproducing an amazingly wide frequency range which stretches way above human perception.
As an example, the entire circuit is capable of handling frequencies of up to 96 kHz, which enables the transfer of uncompressed audio from either SA-CD or DVD Audio. A micro-processor-controlled relay allows noiseless switching between two different high quality audio signals and avoids unpleasant clicking when powering the A1 on or off.
Underneath the large front-panel-mounted aluminium volume control is a high grade ALPS-potentiometer for smooth volume adjustment. This is just part of the attention to detail that ranges from the outer unit construction to its quality integral components - use of a generously-dimensioned toroidal core transformer, plus a combination of carefully selected components allows even the highest-impedance headphones to be driven flawlessly over the entire frequency range.
The provision of a special impedance headphone output ensures that the control range of the volume potentiometer is also perfect for headphones with lower impedance.
The first of the two provided line-ins is hardwired to the A1 line out. The result allows the incoming signal to be loopedthrough even with the A1 in standby mode. So you only have to power up the A1 if you want to increase the enjoyment of your music using your headphones. Two blue LEDs in the front panel monitor the active signal input, with a further multicolour LED giving information about the A1’s operating status. The beyerdynamic A1 - The uncompromising “true companion” for your headphones and a pure masterpiece in audio achievement.
What specialists publications tell about A1...
“beyerdynamic’s tiny titan made child’s play of bridging the gap between the challenges of different converter concepts. (...) The wide bandwidth of this amplifier smoothed away any areas of hardness and, even though its core character is analytical and ultra-precise, all rounded off by a powerful basso profundo, altogether neutral mid-range sound characteristics and the feel of an open room. (...) Purest high-end experience for the head, without any ifs and buts.“ (Image Hifi, 06/2007)
“For low-key connoisseurs”
“Incidentally, the diminutive hiss and crackle levels on the A 1 are as good as it gets and the frequency pass drops by one decibel up to 100 kHz.
The A 1 was also entirely convincing in the listening test. On the classic DT 880 from beyerdynamic it played with great clarity and purity, with a tight bass and clear, clean trebles. At the same time, even when compared to other high-end headset amplifiers, it remains sober and matter-of-fact at all times, and does not allow itself to indulge in any spectacular forms of exaggeration. For example, it does not invest singing voices with greater volume levels than they have in natura. This does not indicate any absence of emotion, but instead delivers pure reality.“ (Stereo, 10/2007)
“With a price tag of almost € 1000, the A 1 is most certainly expensive, but the sound quality more than makes up for this fact.”
“In terms of sound quality, the A 1 headset amplifier sets new standards. What it has to offer by way of resolution, tone colour realism and dynamics is profoundly impressive, all to a standard not achieved by any other specialist headset amplifier.” (avmagazin.de, 6.7.2007)
“The amplifier operates almost entirely without background hiss. Even if you turn up the volume adjuster to maximum, no hiss is audible.”
“A very positive feature is that this amplifier develops its full sound right down at low volume levels, and those levels can be adjusted very precisely.”
“Voice reproduction is also very natural and never sounds too dry. Instead, it always seems very lively and authentic.”
“Summary: The small A1 really has what it takes.“
“Hiss or distortion, even at high volume levels, would only be audible if the unit was malfunctioning.“
“The A1 will serve us in future as a working tool for headset comparisons by virtue of its scope for universal application with automatic impedance adjustment and its good sound qualities.“ (HiFi & Records, 02/2007)
“An incredible win over the mediocre headset connections on CD players or AV receivers. beyerdynamic offers the kind of pre-amp which, in conjunction with the Manufaktur DT 990 headset, puts many speakers costing ten times as much firmly in the shade.“ (Maxim, 09/2007)
“Audio uses the new A 1 headset amplifier from beyerdynamic as its reference amp“ (Audio – statement from listening test, 12/2007)
